In no way do I mean for this lesson to be disparaging to anyone who is blind or has poor eyesight. I have been amazed how some individuals who are truly blind are able to navigate through life. I am also very thankful that they have things like Braille that help them read, canes that help them feel for objects as they walk about, companions who help guide them, and service animals that they can rely on for sight. But one thing I will not do is get in an automobile and let them be the driver!

Those who are truly blind or who have impaired eyesight would not be the best selection for others to follow through a forest or vast wilderness anymore than those who are morally and spiritually blind or who have impaired vision would be good guides to lead others through the pitfalls and trials of life.

Jesus Himself asked the question, “Can a blind man lead a blind man?”He went on to say, “Will they not both fall into a pit?” Luke 6:39

We had a dear friend when we lived in Michigan named Harvey Love who was totally blind and we would have him in our home for dinner and take him dinners. We would pick him up for church services and take him to doctor appointments and shopping but we never let him take us. No one in their right mind would let a blind person take them by the hand so they could follow their lead. So why would we do it morally or spiritually?

Just in case you didn’t know let me share with you what Jesus said about those who were blind morally and spiritually.

“Woe to you, blind guides…You blind fools…You blind men!…You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!…You blind Pharisees!” Matthew 23:16, 17, 19, 24, 26

The word that Jesus used to describe the blind moral and spiritual leaders was, “Hypocrite!”

“Hypocrite” is an actor under an assumed character. They are a stage performer.

So how do we avoid being lead by the blind morally and spiritually? We supplement our faith with, “Virtue, Knowledge, Self-control, Steadfastness, Godliness, Brotherly Affection, Love…” and when we do we will overcome being nearsighted that leads to being blind and experience Vision 2020. 2 Peter 1:5-11
