It has a beautiful sound! It calls for our patriotism. It provides us
with the privilege to fly “old glory.” It guarantees our right to
sing, “ore the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
I love the stories of our forefathers like Paul Revere, George
Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and the many others.
It’s to bad there weren’t tape recorders during their days,
I would love to listen to Patrick Henry saying, “Give me liberty or
give me death.”
“DON’T THROW FREEDOM AWAY!”
Atop the hill in Washington, D.C. stands the Capitol building of the
United States of America. The cornerstone was laid in 1793, but the
crowning touch, “Freedom Lady” wasn’t raised into place until 1863.
This stately statue, twenty feet tall, stands proudly atop the dome of
the Capitol Building. Her face is framed by a crest of stars. Upon her
head is a helmet adorned with stars and an eagles head. She has a
blanket over her left shoulder. In her right hand she holds a sword.
In her left hand she holds a shield of stars and stripes and a wreath
depicting victory.
Sculptured in Rome, the Lady was brought to America aboard a sailing
ship. During the trip across the Atlantic ocean a fierce storm
developed. The captain ordered the cargo thrown overboard to lighten
the load. The sailors wanted to throw the heavy statue overboard, but
the captain refused, shouting,
“NO, NEVER! WE WILL FLOUNDER BEFORE WE THROW FREEDOM AWAY!”
Regardless the cost FREEDOM must never be thrown away.
This especially holds true with the FREEDOM Jesus provides us and Paul
urges us to embrace it with a conviction that will never release it.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free,
and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1
